After two years of using and old version of Drupal 6.14 and old version of Kaltura module 6.x-1.4 , we decided to bite the bullet and upgrade both at the same time.
Our Kaltura uploader stopped working inside our version of Drupal, so we needed to do something.
After agreeing to sign a new 1 year contract, Kaltura offered us two hours of support to help with the upgrade, and assigned a project manager. They tried to raise the price, but being a small company, we balked and they came around to meeting our original pricing.
Kaltura Upgrade – Required Information
Questions from Project manager.
I would like to sum up the information I gathered. I also added some questions that I could not find the answer to:
1. You are currently on Drupal 6.14 and would like to upgrade to Drupal 6.22.
2. What version of the Kaltura module are you currently using?
3. I understand that you have an issue uploading ( will get to it after the upgrade), I would like to understand – since you upgraded Drupal on a local machine – Is the upload issue present on it or on the live account?
The upload issue exists on both versions. Remember -I did not upgrade the drupal module yet.
4. What is the link to the current site? Does it require any credentials? (I would like to take a look at the site)
Login and look around. If you create a new Kaltura node, you will notice the kaltura field with uploader. This is where the upload fails to register into the local system.
5. Do you have the ability to create a staging environment for a test site? I would suggest using a test site so you will be able to give me admin permissions to it but not to the live one.
If you think this is necessary, could I is a sub directory of the main site, and just .htaccess protect?
6. Besides UberCart, what other Modules are installed?
The below has been copied from the updated version on my local machine. Anything with a security vulnerability has been updated.
Kaltura Upgrade – Implementation
After going back and fourth, we decided to back the site up, put it in maintenance mode, and upgrade Drupal, all vulnerable modules, and the Kaltura video module all at once.
I did the following:
- Put site in maintenance mode
- Switched to default theme, and turned off all other themes
- Upgraded Drupal Core
- Turned all modules back on
- Upgraded all vulnerable modules
- Upgraded the Kaltura Module
- Turned my Black Mamba Theme back On
- Testing
Fixing Problems After Kaltura Upgrade
My note to project manager:
The upgrade of Drupal and all vulnerable modules including Kaltura have been updated.
1. It looks like our player has been blown over – it has share buttons on it – this is a private video. We need to make sure that all videos are private when uploaded to new Kaltura control panel as well. Please advise.
2. Under the video, it is displaying the embed code of the video, which never happened before and we obviously do not want.
3. If you add a 7day video content type, which includes a kaltura node, the uploader is still not working and it freezes. I am wondering if the SSL could be the issue, as you mentioned might happen?
4. In the Kaltura Settings, I have this message: Kaltura to Drupal Notification Status: Test call not yet implemented; see [#1025090]
Project Manager Responses:
1. Change the player Id in the Drupal Kaltura Module setting to any player that you wish from the studio. The share button is easy to remove from within the studio.
Our old player is gone – no big deal – I rebuilt it, and assigned it to the Media Node and Media Remix settings and everything is working nicely.Do you recommend SMTP or HTTP streaming?
Also, you can add access control on all your videos to be only available in your domain
I was unable to find this setting. In the past that was a site wide function that was done by your team. Please advise.
2. I do believe that this is another option that can be removed from the module settings.
Can’t find the setting to remove text and code for embed code under player.
3. I will send you a different UIconf id for this widget that should resolve this issue. Can you send me a link to the uploader location? I will need to clone it..
Final Observations of Kaltura Upgrade
In the end, after rebuilding the player, and with a little final help from Kaltura Technical support, we were able to get all our Kaltura functionality back within 24 hours. Not bad.
The biggest problem we had was the addition of Embed code of this video: showing up under the new Kaltura player after upgrade.
